Empowering Youth for Healthy Decision-Making

Summer Enrichment

A major focuses of the summer enrichment program is the prevention of obesity, positive decision making and academic enrichment in our youth.   Childhood obesity has become a serious problem in the United States.  According to research, 50% of all children and teenagers will be overweight or obese by 2010.  Health professionals, community leaders, and popular media nationwide are sounding the alarm about the dramatic rise in obesity among youth.  Ohio is described as being one of the fattest states in America (Healthy People in Healthy Communities, 2003).    Given the health problems associated with obesity (e.g., type 2 diabetes, heart disease, breathing problems and social/emotional problems), helping youth to make healthy decisions to prevent obesity becomes critical. To help address this serious issue, the proposed summer enrichment program seeks to help youth participants become more aware of the need for physical exercise and healthy decision-making
